If the future is made by what we imagine, then I want you to imagine a future where you have the power to shape the world around you. A future where you aren't afraid to challenge status quo thinking or embrace uncertainty where others panic. A future where complacency is nothing more than a distant memory. Now that you're there, I want you to imagine that being your reality today.

This is the power of intentional disruption.

With every passing day, new technologies emerge, social norms evolve, and economic landscapes shift. In this whirlwind of constant change, complacency is not an option. And the only way to break from complacency is by intentionally disrupting yourself. Here's what I mean…

Complacency is "a feeling of quiet pleasure or security, often unaware of some potential danger, defect, or the like." In other words, a state of mind blinds us to the possibilities and pitfalls ahead. This is why intentionally disrupting yourself is both necessary and counterintuitive. Who in their right mind is motivated to leave that "feeling of quiet pleasure or security…"? That is precisely why intentional disruption is needed today.

I know for many, disruption is viewed in a negative light. Many see it as a destructive force, something to be avoided at all costs. But what if you could harness the power of disruption and turn that "destructive force" into positive change? What if we could use it to shatter your complacency and open your eyes to new possibilities? This is the essence of intentional disruption. It's about:

  1. Challenging established patterns, routines, and ideas.
  2. Acknowledging that there's always room for improvement and growth.
  3. Realizing the future is not set in stone, and you have the power to shape it.

How does intentional disruption work?

Intentional disruption starts by recognizing that "clarity" without disruption isn't actual clarity; it's just tunnel vision. Maintaining clarity ensures you're on a path leading to your future vision. You will miss meaningful opportunities without allowing new disruptive ideas and technologies to illuminate your options in the future.

In other words, you need to invite disruptive thoughts, ideas, and practices into your routine and strategy to gain a clear vision of your future. This might mean challenging your assumptions, trying out new technologies, or exploring different ways of doing things. It's about embracing the unknown and stepping out of your comfort zone.

But intentional disruption isn't just about shaking things up for the sake of it. It's a strategic approach aimed at long-term sustainable growth. It's about:

  1. Identifying and leveraging potential obstacles and opportunities to your advantage.
  2. Turning challenges into stepping stones toward a better future.

Strategic Foresight is all about disrupting yourself.

Strategic foresight is the ability to envision yourself in multiple future scenarios and use that information to make better decisions today. It's about asking "what if" questions and entertaining even the most absurd ideas. Only by doing so can you understand what's possible and identify opportunities for REAL innovation and growth. In other words…

Foresight equips you to disrupt yourself before someone or something else does.

Embracing intentional disruption through foresight allows you to break free from complacency and create a future that aligns with your vision and values. Here are four ways to break free from complacency:

  1. Acknowledge the areas where you've become complacent and identify the routines, patterns, and ideas you need to challenge.
  2. Welcome new ideas, try out different approaches, and don't shy away from uncertainty. Remember, disruption is not a destructive force but a tool for positive change.
  3. Explore a wide range of possibilities for your future and consider various scenarios. Ask "what if" questions and entertain absurd ideas. Use strategic foresight as a tool to guide your decisions and actions.
  4. Don't wait for the perfect moment. Make small routine changes, challenge assumptions, and seize new opportunities.

You have two options:

  1. Wait for the future to happen to you. Or...
  2. YOU can happen to the future.

The bottom line is that the choice is yours. Now is the time to take ownership of your future. If you don't, someone else will.
